Building Equity Based Summers Through CA Libraries and Communities

Dear Summer Library Community:

The California State Library, and the Summer at Your Library project, are
launching a new project. The focus is on co-designing an equity and social
justice framework for summer reading program activities and services. To do
this work we are looking for 12 library teams - one administrator and one
front-line staff person - to work with Linda Braun, our consultant, to
co-design this new resource. While helping to develop the framework,
participating teams (co-designers) will have the chance to explore their
own communities, gain insights into the assets available in the community,
and discover how to connect summer programming to equity based summer
services. This equity and social justice framework for summer reading
program activities and services builds on CLA's Summer @ Your Library's
Quality Principles
https://calchallenge.org/resources/quality/californias-quality-principles-and-indicators/,
in particular, Quality Principle IV: Summer @ Your Library is designed to
reach and engage everyone.

We are asking teams to commit to:

Attending and actively participating in 8 Zoom sessions on:

  September 22 (project orientation)
  -

  September 29
  -

  October 13
  -

  October 27
  -

  November 10
  -

  November 24
  -

  December 8
  -

  December 22

Sessions will take place from 10:00 to 11:30 AM

Completing activities outside of the Zoom sessions. These activities may
include feedback on components of the framework as they are developed along
with helping to design tools library staff in CA can use as they move
forward to implement their own equity and social justice based summer
opportunities for all ages.

Spending approximately 2 to 3 hours per week from September 22 through
December 22 on this project.

Providing feedback on materials developed - this request will probably
occur in middle to late January 2021.

Along with the above, we also plan to invite those who participate in the
co-design process to help with the design and facilitation of spring 2021
workshops on integrating the new framework into summer planning.
