Black History Month at Pitt

Black History Month is celebrated annually during the month of February to acknowledge and celebrate the important contributions of people of African descent to our nation's life and culture.

We encourage you to review the expansive  directory of 2021 Black History Month programs [https://www.diversity.pitt.edu/events/monthly-celebrations/university-pittsburghs-k-leroy-irvis-black-history-month-celebration] being facilitated across the University and register for programs of interest. Any Pitt unit that wishes to have their Black History Month program listed on the directory can share their program information via the  Inclusion Network channel [https://teams.microsoft.com/l/channel/19%3abb80bbb9d6e441df874c45eb520c42d4%40thread.tacv2/General?groupId=0d22f6d4-8e69-40c8-93c0-299cd24f87d2&tenantId=9ef9f489-e0a0-4eeb-87cc-3a526112fd0d].

The University's signature event, the  K. Leroy Irvis Black History Month Program [https://www.diversity.pitt.edu/events/monthly-celebrations/university-pittsburghs-k-leroy-irvis-black-history-month-celebration/k] hosted by the Chancellor, is named for K. Leroy Irvis, a 1954 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and one of the most important and influential men in Pennsylvania history.

This year's K. Leroy Irvis program -  Blue, Gold, & Black: Reflections Of The Black Pitt Experience Through The Years [https://pitt.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_iMuEh0llRuipTETFVaN9Zw] - will feature a cross-generational panel of Black Pitt community members reflecting on their Pitt experiences in the midst of volatile racial climates and the debut of a dynamic, living digital archive that is meant to capture and curate the Black Pitt experience over the years.

Connecting the Pitt Disability Community

Pitt professionals with disabilities have come together to form a new Pitt staff and employee resource group - the Pitt Disability Community - to influence out and to build community within. Broadly, the Pitt Disability Community has three main goals; be a voice, raise awareness, and create social connections.

The group will be a unified voice to the Pitt community on issues regarding disability. They will advocate for the needs of the disability community, furthering the University's goal of ensuring people with disabilities have a seat at the table.

The group will raise awareness of both disability in the workplace and the resources available to Pitt professionals with disabilities. Greater awareness of disabilities among Pitt’s professionals will have a two-fold benefit; those with disabilities will become aware of the resources available to them, and the greater Pitt community will learn how to support other professionals with disabilities.

Finally, the founders of this group will work to build community among people with disabilities.  We hope to become a resource and support system to one another. We want this community to create a culture where every Pitt faculty and staff member with a disability feels included and supported.

This group and its events are open to everyone - having a disability is not required. We hope you will join us for some of our upcoming engagements:
